The survey provided a vast new data set to help determine the impact of migration on Sri Lanka. Covering more than 3,000 households, it is larger than any comparable survey in Sri Lanka and, reporting from 22 of the island’s 25 districts, it presents the most comprehensive overview of international migration from the country to date. Given the tremendous significance of migration in Sri Lanka, in economic, cultural, social and political terms, other detailed surveys are sure to follow. The authors hope that this survey will serve as a useful baseline for future work and indicate interesting hypotheses or avenues of likely further research. In the meantime, it will provide a useful resource for analysis of international migration from Sri Lanka which warrants much more in depth analysis.
